The Primer
Reading Your EhBC’s

November ‘97 Volume 1.1

A Welcome From the EhBC Group

Welcome to the very first issue of The Primer, the official newsletter of the EhBC community.  If you've stumbled across this newsletter by accident, or are reading it over someone's shoulder at a bus stop, you may want to turn away now before things get too explicit for you.

Still with us? Good!

The reason for giving you that advance warning is simple: the EhBC community is a group of people who meet on a monthly basis to discuss our shared interest in erotic domination and submission.

Yes, that's right -- we're into all sorts of kinky things like bondage and discipline.

Despite having a newsletter, the EhBC group is not a formal "organization". We're just a loose collection of like-minded people who have gotten together to explore our common interests. Our unofficial motto is "Socialize, inform, play ". That means that we organize social events, play various erotic games with one another, and try to provide useful information about our activities to anyone who's interested.

Up until now, our only means of that sharing information has been an electronic mailing list and a web site. That's great for people who have access to the Internet, but there are a lot of people out there who don't. The Primer is our first attempt to reach out to those people, and give them a way to connect up with a community that shares their interests.

The purpose of The Primer is to provide up-to-date information about the social activities of our group, as well as helpful hints about various aspects of bondage and discipline, domination and submission.

As with any newsletter, the contents of The Primer will be shaped by its contributors. If there's something you'd like to see included here, be sure to let us know. Better yet, offer to write something yourself!

We hope you enjoy our first issue. And remember: all the activities that we participate in are Safe, Sane and Consensual -- always!

- Bernie Roehl, on behalf of the EhBC Administration

Bill of Materials

This set of three spreader bars will run you approximately $21.

Requirements:

1 10' piece of 1" PVC tubing, cut into the following sizes (you can change these to suit your own needs): 2 x 3', 1 x 4'

25' 1/4" nylon rope (you can go to 3/8" if you want), cut into three pieces: 9', 2 x 7' (twice the length of each tube, plus surplus for the knots an rings)

6 x 1" welded rings. 11/4" rings will work as well; 1" is the minimum diameter you can use with the 1" tubing, however.

roll of "tacky paper", your choice of print :) (also known as shelf paper, or Mac Tac)

Cut or have the tubing cut into the required lengths. Cut the rope as well. The tacky paper, assuming you are using the 1" diameter tubing, will be cut into strips 11 cm wide by the length of the tubes (plus a couple of inches for end-wrapping).

Fold the rope in half and drop the fold down the first tube. While the loose ends are still free, tie a knot - pick a good, non-slipping knot, as the nylon is slippery and knots *will* slide - in the rope, then feed the rope so that the knot moves into the tube, leaving about an inch or so of loop out either end of the tube. It may take you a couple of tries to adjust the knot appropriately.

On one end of the tube take the loop of rope and pull it up, through, and around the back of one of the rings. It's easy to show hard to explain, so ask me to demonstrate or show you at some point - the end result should look like a half hitch, but without a free end. Now repeat the process with a ring on the other end of the bar, bearing in mind that if you've done this correctly, the rope loop will be quite tight and you may have to fight the loop up and around the ring.

Once the rope and rings are in place, peel the backing off the tacky paper and lay the strips pattern side down on something hard and flat. Line up the tube with the top edge of the strip, then begin to roll, very slowly, the tube along the strip.

Work the paper with your fingers as you roll, to keep air bubbles from forming. Roll slowly and evenly to keep the tacky paper, which is actually a vinyl material, from stretching.

When the roll is done, make sure the covering is smooth. Then take a pair of scissors and cut the paper, which extends past the edges of the tubes down into strips, cutting towards the tube. Fold these strips over the edges of the tube to cover the raw PVC edges (if you're worried about smoothing these out, the PVC is soft enough to be smoothed out with some steel wool).

It's not the prettiest way of capping the ends, but it works until I have more time to figure out something more elegant :)

Now repeat this process for the other two bars (or however many you have cut).

And voila ... you'll have a set of spreader bars all of your very own. Largely indestructible, inexpensive, and you can design them to match any decor! And yes, I make custom sets on request :)
